During the 1700s vues d'optiques - or perspective views- led to a European collecting craze in homes and print shops. These were often panoramic city views, which were were specifically designed to create the illusion of depth when viewed with a optical device called a zograscope. These prints could be found in every fashionable drawing room or travelling fair and meant people could get a glimpse of the world, without leaving their home town.
This reprint is based on an antique watercoloured engraving we acquired from the 1700s. The view with its pink skies and murky turquoise River Thames, includes various boats in front of the original Westminster Bridge (only the second bridge built after London Bridge). It also includes the Palace of Westminster on the right, which burnt down in the 1830s making this a unique snapshot into London centuries ago. The print is titled in French: 'Westminster Bridge from the North Side'.
