A charming reprint titled 'Cricketer', based on an engraving from the 1730s that we recently acquired. This depicts a gentleman posing with a cricket ball and bat - by a set of stumps. What's interesting about this image is the spatula-shaped bat which was typical of the 1700s. This was a move away from the previous century's hockey stick style (but not yet the flatter rectangular bats we know today, designed to deal with harder strikes and overarm bowling). This gentleman represents an era when cricket was starting to establish itself from small villages as a leading sport in London and other English counties.
Hand framed in a linen mount and aubergine moulding to compliment the Gentleman's olive green attire.
