The Oranges

A pair of hand-framed reprints depicting oranges adorned with decorative blue ribbons.

The originals of these illustrations were published in the 1600s, in works complied by an Italian scholar who was friends with Galileo. This 17th century series was thought to be the first of its kind and described oranges, lemons and limes in all their varieties. The life-sized engravings were created by a Dutch printmaker, who was notable for his attention to detail and surface texture. Each ribbon surrounding the citrus fruits was used as a banner to display the fruit's taxonomic name.

These pairs are hand-framed in beautiful orange stripe mouldings with a unique bevelled profile.

All our reprint collections are limited in number, hand framed, glazed with Artglass -  and originate from antiques specially sourced by Petri Prints.
