A decorative hand framed print depicting a 19th century truffle hunting scene in rural France. Titled in French, Chercheur de Truffes (truffle hunter), our reprint is directly based on an antique engraving published over 150 years ago - and brought into our private archive.
The print is hand framed with a bevelled natural wood moulding and a deep, warm-blue mount. The artwork has been surrounded by a geometric patterned border (based on a pattern block printed by hand).
The practice for searching for truffles in countries such as France, Italy and Spain has spanned millennia. But hunting flourished in France during the 1800s after an epidemic wiped out half the country's vineyards- leading the replanting of truffle oaks, creating abundant new forests for many truffles to be cultivated and consumed. Finding truffles became a popular activity - with enthusiastic pigs used to locate the gourmet fungi.
All our reprint collections are limited in number and originate directly from antiques personally sourced by Petri Prints.
