The London Views

£630.00

A reprint collection with 18th century London panoramic views depicting life in the capital during the early 1700s. These bird's eye illustrations were formative for their time - being a cross between a map and a landscape view - and have also been extremely valuable for understanding gardening trends and architectural influences centuries ago.

The full set has been curated to broadly cover the geographical terrain of the city: moving from Chelsea and St James's Palace, to Somerset House and Hoxton - as well as Lambeth along to Greenwich. Each scene is surrounded by a Greek key border (the artwork of which was taken from an original antique pattern) and hand framed in textured off white oatmeal mounts, with burl wood style frames.

Details on each view:

  • St James's Palace: Built by King Henry VIII and initially used as his hunting lodge (with deer in the neighbouring St James's Park).
  • Chelsea, depicting the former Beaufort House. A manor house positioned at what is now the corner of Beaufort Street and the King's Road (and was once home to Sir Thomas Moore).
  • Somerset House. Depicting the old building on the bank of the Thames, which was the official royal residence during the 1600s and survived the Great Fire of London.
  • Lambeth, depicting Lambeth Palace on the south bank of the River Thames (London residence to the Archbishops of Canterbury).
  • Hackney: A view of Balmes House estate in Hoxton, a 16th century three story manor house which stood on what's now De Beauvoir Road.
  • Greenwich, depicting Greenwich hospital - a refuge for retired or injured sailors from the Royal Navy.
