A horse race triptych directly based on an original early 1800s pen and ink sketch (brought into our private archive), depicting a race at York Racecourse. The three panels span a panoramic view with multiple horses and jockeys in full gallop across the foreground.
Beautiful gestural lines (characteristic of pen and ink drawings) capture the sense of motion and bustling atmosphere. In the central panel, the once standing 1700s grandstand is seen with a ground-floor betting room, first-floor dining room and roof viewing area filled with spectators.
Although based on a single sheet drawing, we have intentionally split our print collection across three frames to add visual interest; allowing the eye to focus on individual details within each panel, while still admiring the whole composition.
Hand framed in a delicate beaded gold-leaf moulding with a thin profile (chosen to not disrupt the flow of the illustration).
All our reprint collections are limited in number and originate directly from antiques personally sourced by Petri Prints.
